NEED AN ‘A’ TO A ‘Q’?
Because there’s no such thing as a silly question, especially when it comes to your health.
Health can be a tricky thing, and I know you want to be well informed before trying out yet another health professional (I’ve been in that boat myself!) Below are some commonly asked questions and additional transparency about what it’s like to work with me.
What exactly is a Functional Health Practitioner?
This is best explained over here: What the F is Functional Health?
What symptoms/struggles/issues can you help me with?
My particular areas of interest are:
Chronic fatigue, ongoing fatigue, unstable energy, and burnout.
“IBS” and digestive issues.
Hormone imbalances, menstrual irregularities, skin issues, and fertility concerns.
Day-to-day stress, anxiety and feelings of overwhelm.
Emotional eating, over-eating, and under-eating.
People who are doing all the "right things" and not getting any results.
People who have been told their lab tests are “normal” and they’re “fine”, but feel far from it!
Where are you based?
I’m based in Perth, Western Australia, however technology is a wonderful thing and allows me to work online via a combination of video chat and email. I work with clients all around Australia and New Zealand (where I’m originally from). I also have clients in the USA and UK.
How do online consults work?
After you've booked an Initial Consult I email some intake forms to be completed by you, and reviewed by me, before our first session. Then we jump on a video call at our booked time and dive in! We stay in touch via email between sessions to help you troubleshoot any sticky spots.
I work with you in a fully supportive way so you never have to feel alone or lost in the dark. Plus, online consults mean you don't have to leave the comfort of your home to get your health sorted! #winning
Can I email you between sessions?
Email check-ins between sessions* are an important part of your Health Rebuilding Program. These allow us to cover questions from your last call, any issues you’re having with your Foundational Wellness Plan (aka all the practical areas of wellness), testing, or troubleshooting your extended protocol. I also love to get emails about your wins and health updates!
*Email support is not available outside of a program. You need to be an active client having regular sessions with me to get support via email.
Do you offer one-off sessions?
You don't expect to get results from just one session at the gym, and your health is no different. It. Takes. Time! Regular sessions build a solid foundation and facilitate the healing process. When getting started, I believe it’s important to have 1-1 guidance to gain traction (this on-and-off business gets us nowhere fast!)
After you’ve been through a program with me, you’ll have the option of one-off sessions for a re-boot, or to re-run lab tests if necessary. This is something we’ll discuss on your last call to ensure you have an ongoing plan and support network when your program finishes.
I’m working with another practitioner already and only want to access lab testing, can you help?
In some cases, this is an option. However, booking in for an Initial Consult before running any labs is still essential. I’d also require some insight as to how your current practitioner can support you with your protocol. This is to ensure you get the most out of your investment and the best results for your ongoing health. Please contact me for more details: email@example.com
What are your qualifications?
You can read more about my personal story and qualifications over on the page that’s all About Me.
I want to know if you can help me before I book in!
Me too! That’s why I’m happy to offer a FREE Wellness Chat before you book an Initial Consult with me. It’s important for us both to be on the same page for our work together to be successful. These chats are obligation free. Because not all first dates work out, and that's ok!
I’m in Perth, can we do a consult in person?
Currently I don’t offer in-person consultations. However, I do know several Perth practitioners who do, and am happy refer you if you need help finding one.
What areas of health and wellness can you help me with?
The areas of health and wellness I can help you with include: nutrition, sleep, movement, stress reduction, self-care, supplementation, emotions and mindset. We can also delve into the Psychological and Spiritual aspects of wellness (if this resonates with you).
I also utilise the latest in Functional Lab Testing to get to the root cause of your health struggles and to set you up with a targeted protocol to address your symptoms head on.
In my experience, this multifaceted approach addresses the whole picture and sets you up for long term success. Click through to learn more about Working With Me.
How long will it take to get results?
This depends on how long you’ve been unwell, coupled with your desire and commitment to becoming well again. It's hard to say without having an idea of your health history, current symptoms, and goals. It will take more than one session however, and we’ll unravel the specifics of this during our calls together.
You mentioned functional lab tests. Which ones do you work with?
Nutripath, Nutrisearch, Research Nutrition, Biohealth, iScreen, Precision Analytical and Nutrition Genome are the companies I/we currently order lab tests through (depending on which country you’re in).
How does lab testing work?
Once we decide which lab tests will be helpful for you, we place an order for your test kits through the testing lab. Test kits are sent to you directly, complete with step-by-step instructions. Some tests are paid for on ordering, others are paid for when you send the kits back. This depends on the lab and you’ll be informed in advanced.
Once you’ve received your test kit/s, you’ll take a sample (as per the test instructions) and send it back to the lab in the envelope they supply. The results will then be sent to me once they’re available. I’ll review them and write a personal report and protocol based on your results, which we’ll then discuss during a 75 minute Test Review Session.
Basic blood testing can be done through your GP. You'll have to book appointments with your doctor for those (I can help you find a good doctor if you don’t currently have one). We review any blood test results together in a Coaching Call or a 15 minute SOS Call.
How much does functional lab testing cost?
Lab tests range from $0-$360 AUD (except the DNA test which is in USD) and prices are listed on the Functional Lab Testing page. These fees are paid direct to the lab and are separate from your consult/program fees.
Please note that I don’t get any percentage from these lab testing fees, and that any testing recommendations are based solely on your symptoms, health goals and personal interest. Discounts on lab tests are not an option as I have no control over fees set by the labs.
Are these tests covered by Medicare?
As great as our medical system is in Australia, Medicare only covers fees for tests that keep us disease free and out of pathological states. They don’t cover fees for services that get/keep us in an optimal state. Functional lab tests, like the ones listed on my site, are unfortunately not currently covered by Medicare or by private health funds. This is true with all functional and non-medically driven testing.
Can’t I just get my doctor to run these for me?
Not all GPs are functionally minded, and for the most part, they’re interested in keeping you disease free and upright (which is amazing and an important thing to get help with!) They don’t necessarily have the time or inclination to take a deep dive into all aspects of your health to make sure you’re functioning optimally (have you heard how much nutrition training they get at medical school!?)
Some doctors are open minded and will run additional testing, but this is generally blood testing for the purpose of looking for major dysfunction, not optimal function. Theirs is a “diagnose and treat” model, whereas most people with chronic un-wellness need more than this approach. For the most part, you can still live with fatigue, “IBS” and/or hormonal imbalances. It’s not fun - but it won’t kill you!
If your doctor does run any functional testing or advanced blood work outside of this model, there’s usually still an out of pocket fee paid to the labs (see the above Medicare section).
OK, where do I start?
The best place to start working with me is with an Initial Consult if you know you’re ready to get your health sorted. This is a risk free way of finding out if we’re a match before you commit to one of my programs.
